Executive Summary: Canine Parvovirus is an aggressive, highly contagious viral disease
affecting unvaccinated and partially vaccinated puppies. Early intervention within the first 24 to 48 hours is
the single biggest determinant of survival.
How Parvovirus Spreads
Parvovirus is transmitted
through direct oral or nasal contact with infected canine feces, contaminated footwear, park grass, or bowls.
The virus is exceptionally resilient and can persist in soil for over a year.
Critical Early Symptoms
The earliest sign is
sudden lethargy and refusal to eat favorite treats. Within 12 to 24 hours, this progresses to frequent
vomiting, severe watery or foul-smelling bloody diarrhea, high fever, and rapid dehydration.
Clinical Inpatient Management at Akshaya Pet Clinic
Because there is no direct
antiviral cure, supportive intensive care saves lives. At our 24/7 Pragathi Nagar facility, infected puppies
receive IV fluid resuscitation, anti-emetic medications, gastric mucosal protectants, broad-spectrum
antibiotics to prevent secondary sepsis, and nutritional support.
Home Quarantine & Disinfection
Regular household
detergents do NOT destroy Parvovirus. Diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 30 parts water) must be used on
non-porous surfaces. Never introduce a new unvaccinated puppy into a home that had Parvo within the previous
12 months.
